> When used as Hamburg Mattenfilters (HMF), foam sheets come large and suitable for cutting for tanks under 50cm x 50cm (19.685"). -> For example, when the sheet is cut in half, the width (25cm/9.84") will fit the inside dimensions of 2, 10-gallon aquariums.
> Flow rate, as well as, the porosity as pores per inch (ppi), and the thickness of foam pads, can be modified to handle the aquarium bio-load. -> For example, the average aquarium will utilize moderate porosity (35ppi) and 1 sheet thick enough (5cm/2") to support itself upright. Whereas, course porosity (25ppi) in combination with moderately thick foam (1 to 2 sheets+) is used to maintain a flow rate necessary for keeping larger fish (like cichlids, goldfish, arowana, etc.) or providing flowthrough in a sump. Furthermore, in a sump, foam sheets should be used in a strategic order from course (25ppi) to moderate (35ppi) to fine (50ppi) porosity to optimize mechanical filtration.
