Assassin Snail (Anentome helena)
The Assassin or Helena snail is a predatory snail, hunting and killing other snails for food. Assassin Snails are great for pest control in the aquarium, especially in smaller tanks that are not suitable for a group of snail-eating fish! Identified by a conical shell with alternating yellow and black stripes, they are easy to spot when they are not burrowed in the substrate. These carnivorous scavengers are generally safe in the community aquarium, however, they are opportunistic and if they are hungry, may attack slow or weak organisms. Meaty foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms can be supplemented when snail prey (bladder snails, ramshorn, Malaysian, etc.) are limited. They are compatible with live plants. Available in groups of 3 or 6 snails.
Assassin Snail reproduction in the freshwater aquarium happens via egg-laying. Identified as singular, 1mm, white eggs affixed by a thin angular webbing. Eggs can be found attached to plants, decor, etc. Population size is generally determined by food availability.
